Donnie Darko: Director's Cut (Throwback)

http://donniedarkothrowback.eventbrite.com

Halloween is coming up and Frank’s been waiting for his Halloween party for too long.  We’re bringing back one of our favorite productions -- this time bigger and better. Here's what happened last time:

Donnie Darko (Director’s Cut) became an instant cult classic as a sci-fi take on suburban America, and society's tendency to adapt to standard social norms against deeper, natural intuition.

As an immensely intelligent existentialist with the ability to see into the future, teenager, Donnie Darko, knows the world is about to end -- because his big evil rabbit friend Frank told him so.

Our special guests for the evening are Black Lodge and Modern Gypsies Productions.

Black Lodge are a collective of musicians led by guitarist + composer Geoff Gersh. They are best known for film re-scores and performing live at screenings.

Modern Gypsies Productions is a world-renowned production company specializing in the development of cutting-edge interactive and immersive performance concepts, breath-taking stage acts and visual elements for live events, festivals, and film.  They believe in innovative ideas, thrive on creativity and produce captivating spectacle moments unlike any other.  Modern Gypsies performances worldwide include work with Madonna and Lady Gaga, as well as alongside headlining DJ’s such as Diplo, Steve Aoki, Tiesto and Hardwell to name a few.  Their spectacles have been featured in film with The Late Show - David Letterman,  The Apprentice - Donald Trump and Mission Fashion - Lebanon as well as countless others.  Their originality, skill and love for the craft combine forces to create unforgettable experiences.

No. 22 - Man on the Moon feat. Musical Comedian Daniel Koren

Get tickets here

In this special screening we explore the notions of live comedy and film.  Little Cinema is proud to invite to the stage our favorite musical comedian Danile Koren for a comedic battle with the legendary Andy Kaufman - as played by Jim Carrey - in the film Man on the Moon.

Daniel Koren is an Emmy nominated Comedian/Composer based in Brooklyn, NY. He is known for his musical comedy with the Koren Ensemble, which has received more than a million views on YouTube. His live shows are multi-faceted, combining video, comedy and live music.

About the film:

Man on the Moon, directed by Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus), is a biographical comedy-drama about the late comedian and entertainer, Andy Kaufman. The film follows the eccentric and enigmatic Kaufman – played by Jim Carrey – from childhood, through the ups and downs of his career as he makes a name for himself.

Even though the film received mixed reviews, Carrey received critical acclaim for his performance and won a Golden Globe.  Additional appearances are made throughout the film by Danny DeVito, Courtney Love, and Paul Giamatti.

Lost Highway feat. Late Sea + CHNNLS

Tickets: https://losthighwaylittlecinema.eventbrite.com

Join us for a special screening of David Lynch's French American film, Lost Highway, featuring a full live rescore by Late Sea with remixed scenes by AV DJ CHNNLS.

Released in 1997 - and the first of Lynch's ‘Hollywood Trilogy’ - Lost Highway quickly became one of Lynch’s most infamous films, exploring  the mind of a man as he slowly loses his grip on reality. Or does he…?

As we dive deeper and deeper into the world of Fred Madison - a brilliant musician who is obsessively jealous of his wife - we start to blur the line between reality and imagination.  In true Lynch fashion, there’s no real sense to be made of the storyline, and to try is to miss the point.

This one time screening will be underscored by Late Sea, the NY based ambient avant-rock sensation that recently won the Kevin Spacey Foundation award for their multi media project, The Writers Trilogy. The band is lead by composer and multi instrumentalist Izzy Gliksberg with Sam Nester on trumpet and laptop and Joe Peri on drums. They will be joined on stage by AV artist and Little Cinema founder, CHNNLS, who will remix, extend and enhance moments in the film, live and in tune with the band, further blurring the line between film, music and video art.

Wizard of Oz IMMERSIVE feat. Dark Side of the Hudson + CHNNLS + Modern Gypsies Productions + House of Yes

Tickets: https://darksidewizardofoz.eventbrite.com

Come to House of Yes on July 12th, because there’s no place like home….

It’s our 20th screening anniversary and we’re going BIG. Like, taking on Broadway BIG, with a cast of over 20 performers as we synchronize a live re-score of the album, Dark side of the Moon with The Wizard of Oz.

Somewhere over the Rainbow, someone played Dark Side of the Moon and watched Dorothy and Toto walk the yellow brick road…. But could it be true? Does Victor Flemming’s 1939 classic magically pair with the 1973 Pink Floyd album? Little Cinema has decided to put the rumors to rest.

We are bringing this magic to the stage live for the first time ever with a 12 piece tribute band, an international audio visual DJ, and our very own in-house Dorothy plus all her new friends.

The show will take place in two parts.

Act 1

The Wizard of Oz vs. Dark Side of the Hudson feat. CHNNLS: Dark Side of the Hudson – one of New York’s preeminent Pink Floyd tribute acts – will bring to life this classic album in its entirety, recreating the experience of needle hitting vinyl. Audio Visual DJ CHNNLS will be live-mixing the film, integrating original dialogue and complimentary video art.

Act 2

Wizard of Oz IMMERSIVE feat. Modern Gypsies & House of Yes: The second half of the film will continue with its original score. House of Yes and Modern Gypsies Productions will incorporate immersive acrobatics, dance, and live theater into the film, in true Little Cinema style.

From the quadrophonic surround sound, to stunning visual projections, to the inspired musical performance, it’s a show not to be missed!

Muhammad Ali ... Remixed.

The Champ. The Dancing. The Rhymes.

Join us for a remixed screening of the Academy award winning documentary, 'When We Were Kings,' which tells the story of Muhammad Ali's famous 1974 fight against George Forman in Zaire.

Muhammad Ali's recent passing has made us reflect back on the full life of The Greatest, from sports hero to human rights activist.  This documentary features timeless archival footage of Ali from the 60's, and looks back at James Brown, Don King and George Forman's impact on the magic and rawness of this politically charged era.

This special screening will be underscored and remixed in parts by the band El Chico Blanco and AV DJ CHNNLS, turning Ali's famous verses into live mixed media art on Little Cinema's big screen and stage.

Ali, boomsye!

Drag. Pose. Vogue. Realness. Shade. Love.

26 years ago, a poignant and exhilarating film of the then-still-burgeoning vogue ball lifestyle hit the screen scene and taught the world how to 'work'. Now, we bring it to you. Hard.

Featuring live dance performance from New York's vogue legends and hottest newcomers. Stay with us late into the night as we open up the dance floor and invite you to show us what you're working with.

This documentary by Jennie Livingston captures the competitive ball scene world of an 80s New York, a world of transformative glamour, beauty, and empowerment for the disenfranchised— a tradition that continues to this day.

DANCE. WORK.

Everyone has their part to play in the game of life -- whether you’re a butch queen, a “realness girl” or a schoolboy, you better show up and let the world see what you’re working with. Hit the floor after the film. We will be giving away prizes and drinks for the best styles, looks and realness.

DRESS TO IMPRESS. Live it. Own it.

No. 14 - The Warriors feat. NYC Subway Artists + Black Lodge (partial rescore)

Alright now... all you Boppers out there in the big city, all you with an ear for the action, I’ve been asked to relay an important message….

Tickets: http://tinyurl.com/hv7vx52

The boys are coming to town and we are here to throw down.

Join us for the screening of the 1979 action thriller The Warriors featuring a partial rescore by Black Lodge, plus live performances by select subway artists and dancers from the five boroughs of NYC.

Can you dig it?

About the  Feature Film: Based in New York City in the 70’s, this cult classic follows the gang The Warriors as they fight their way back to their home turf after being framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. Due to the film’s subject matter, Walter Hill’s The Warriors has been cited as one of the most controversial movies ever made – ahead of Caligula, Kids, and Cannibal Holocaust.  It even provoked a series of vandalism and violent acts upon its release that required Paramount to temporarily halt their original advertising campaign.  However, even with a rocky start, The Warriors has become a cult classic, inspiring spinoffs and even a comic book series.

Special Guests:

Black Lodge, a collective of musicians led by guitarist + composer Geoff Gersh, will be rescoring parts of the film.  Additional talent to be announced soon including legendary subway artists.

Little World No. 1 - Necktie Youth

Ticketshttp://tinyurl.com/zgoqeay

Since our world keeps getting smaller and smaller, we are officially making it 'Little'.

Introducing our new series 'Little World', dedicated to foreign cinema fused with our signature blend of live performances and celebratory parties.

Once a month we'll pick a country and devote a night to bringing its culture to Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Our first destination will be Johannesburg, South Africa, for a screening of the charged film, Necktie Youth. Disillusion. Post-Apartheid. Post-Internet.

Jabz and September are angry. The two twenty-something year olds float through a day of drugs, sex and philosophizing in their privileged Johannesburg suburban neighborhood.  Shot using bold-black-and white photography, Necktie Youth pivots around the fall out of the internet live-streamed suicide of their friend, Emily.  They are ill-equipped to handle the tragedy that interrupts the mundaneness of their millennial lives.

"Breakthrough director Shongwe-La Mer's racially varied human subjects belong to what South Africans have come to term the "Born Free" generation: Born after Nelson Mandela's liberation and into a new democracy, they haven't directly known the horrors of the country's political past, yet are still living with its legacy." - Variety Magazine

Live underscore and performances by South African/New York duo Tiger+Man.

Join us at our afterparty as we dance late night with Sta7ck and Octagon 360 records. You've never heard Afrobeat quite like this.

Bada Boom. Big Bada Boom! CONGRATULATIONS!!! You Are A Winner!

Congratulations, and you're welcome.  For our 10th screening anniversary, the House of Yes resident weirdos are pulling out all the stops. Anya, Kae, Hadley Fantastic, Modern Gypsies, random opera singers, gymnasts, stewardesses from outer space... you know, the works.

House of Yes favorites Jefferson909 and friends are throwing down a special sci-fi DJ set after the movie. (You've seen what they do to our dance floor for the Thank You parties -- that's really all we need to say about that.)

Grab your multi-pass and jump a taxi to House of Yes for a night of dancing, laughter, and transformation. Never seen the film? Not to worry, history predicts that there will no better way to see it!

As we take off into the future, dinner will be served in the theater throughout the evening from the delectable Queen of Falafel.  We're adding rotisserie chicken to the menu that you can consume with your bare hands.

About the Film:

Come be enraptured by Luc Besson's (Lucy 2014, The Big Blue, 1998) version of the twenty-third century, where the universe is threatened by the approaching Great Evil.  Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) finds the survival of planet Earth to be his responsiblity when Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) -- the human embodiment of the fifth element and the only hope for mankind's survival -- falls into his cab.  The fate of the world is in Korben's hands as he races against time to reunite her with four mythical stones representing the basic elements of earth, air, fire and water.

About the Film:

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, directed by F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu), is considered by many to be the art of wordless cinema at its zenith.  Famous for its iconic film sequences involving light and shadow, double exposure, and seamless scene transitions, the 1927 silent film stylistically fuses together the visual aesthetics of German Expressionism with an American narrative.

Bored with his wife and his simple life, a farmer falls for a city girl who convinces him to drown his wife so they can run away together. When it comes time for him to do the deed, he realizes he can’t.  He follows his wife into the city after she flees from him attempting to apologize and reconcile. Eventually, as they find their way through the madness of the city, she forgives him, and they rediscover their love for one another.

The film has been digitally remastered and will be played in full HD.

No 8. - Donnie Darko (Directors Cut) Feat Black Lodge & Modern Gypsies

Join us for the third installment of our Little Darkness series where we recontextualize our screening using live musicians & an Audio/Visual DJ to extend, highlight and re-imagine parts of the film.

Modern Gypsies is a production company located in Brooklyn who specialize in spectacular and unique live performance concepts.

Prepare yourself for an eerie night of beauty with confronting moments of honest darkness.
